Here’s the closest major galaxy to our own, M31 the Andromeda galaxy, but there’s an unexpected object in the image, a blue arc of oxygen which despite the multitude of images of Andromeda hadn’t been seen previously.
Astronomers at this point are not sure what is causing it or even where it is, is it a much closer filament of oxygen in a nebula, or a much larger structure closer to the galaxy itself.

One of the reasons such structures are often missed by professional telescopes is they tend to focus in on a much smaller portion of the sky and use very specific filters to pick out the EM they are interested in watching. Armature astronomers however tend to see things others miss, the bigger picture, and that’s exactly what this is here.
